About Us

The TPF Foundation is a U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization committed to making a global difference. Founded by Thiru Thirupuvanam, the foundation serves as a bridge between generous donors and deserving recipients, focusing on education, healthcare, and social causes.

Our transparent model ensures that 100% of donations go directly to vetted charitable projects in the U.S. and India. We maintain zero employees and no fundraising costs, guaranteeing that every dollar works toward creating impact.

Our Values

Sacred Trust

Every donation is hard-earned money, and we treat it with the utmost responsibility and transparency.

The Joy of Giving

Giving releases endorphins, bringing more fulfillment than receiving. We aim to educate donors and recipients alike about the true value of giving.

Legacy of Values

Leaving wealth to heirs has its limits. We believe in leaving values, not just assets, encouraging independence and success in future generations.

Family & Friends

As you know, charitable giving is not something new. Together, over the past 30 years, we have helped more than 5,000 primary school students receive an education in Bangalore India through the Thirupuvanam Foundation.

I know we are all incredibly proud of this work. And we are deeply indebted to all of you for the generous and continued donations you’ve made with both your time and money.

This country (USA) gave us an opportunity – this is the most giving country in the whole world, and having benefited from its bounty – it is time to give back. Over the next few years, we want to get our foundation’s credibility established.

To do this we established the Thirupuvanam Foundation in Bangalore, India – this foundation is recognized as a Tax-Deductible Charitable organization, is based in India and has done some great work in the field of Education for the last 30 years. Both in supporting several local schools, providing scholarships to needy students, etc.

In 2014, we started a similar organization in the US called TPF Foundation, this is also recognized by the US government as a charitable 501(c)(3) organization, and we have used this organization as a pass-through to donate funds to other US charitable organizations and to Indian charitable organizations, primarily the Thirupuvanam Foundation.

What has the TPF Foundation done ?

When TPF Foundation was started, we needed to build a viable track record to get the organization set up. This will involve giving to US charitable organization that are aligned with our mission - to empower people through education, good health, and social causes that uplift the needy.

We have identified and already started giving to our first US based organization: Money Think.

Over the last 10+ years, Money Think has provided financial mentoring to nearly 100,000 high school students all across the US. They have an incredibly innovative curriculum that integrates pop culture and technology to ensure students that graduate high school know the fundamentals of how to budget, save, and spend responsibly. They have been 1 of only 15 foundations recognized by the White House as a “Champion of Change.” This was just the first organization we funded. In 2024 this organization got disbanded and the services that they provided were taken over by other organizations. This happens in the NGO field.

In 2019 we found 2 great organizations that do incredible work in supporting the Needy and in the key field of Education and Health, they are RIP Medical Debt, whose name got changed in 2024 to Undue Medical Debt and Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Undue Medical Debt helps the needy to forgo debt that they incur when they have unexpected medical issues. Everyone gets into medical situations; some of us have medical insurance, but several of the needy do not have medical insurance and their only hope is to either get a medical loan or go into debt with the various hospitals and other medical facilities. These organizations try to recover the debt from the individual and after some time, they pass these debts to collection agencies. Undue Medical Debt works with these Collection Agencies to pay them $1 for each $100 of debt and gets these debts erased from the individual’s credit rating. The $1 comes from donors like us (TPF Foundation) and others, so if TPF Foundation gives $10,000/- to Undue Medical Debt – they are able to erase debt totaling 1 million owed by multiple individuals. This has been the most effective way to help these needy folks who get into medical debt.

The other organization that we support is the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Thurgood Marshall was the first non-white individual to become a judge on the US Supreme Court. He was one of the lawyers and legal advisors to Martin Luther King, who was instrumental in the Civil Rights Movement. The Civil Rights Movement is the movement that opened the US and US immigration to non-whites. Indians like me and many others (once we knew that there was equal opportunity) came to the US to study and to make a home for ourselves. The hard work of Equal Rights for non-whites was fought by the Black Americans – like Martin Luther King, Thurgood Marshall and so many others in the 1950s and 1960s. We Indians benefited from the hard work of these folks, which opened so many doors for us of Indian origin. I personally felt that we need to give back to the Black community, and Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) is a great organization that supports the Historically Black Colleges and Universities. We are very pleased to support this organization on an annual basis.

Another organization that we have supported throughout the years is Shanthi Bhavan Children’s Fund. This organization has done an excellent job in running schools in Bangalore, India that take a single child from a family that is being raised in a slum and provide education from Kindergarten to College. They provide room and board, and several of these children have gone on to Ivy League schools in the USA. When you take one child out of poverty, that means for the next generations of that child, they will all be out of poverty. We are very pleased to support this organization on an annual basis.

In 2023 we reached out to Teach for India (TFI) and we gave them a grant and have established a long-term working relationship with TFI. They are based on the Teach for America model; and they bring in young graduates and make them go through a rigorous training program. Over a thousand students apply for 100 slots to become Fellows. Students who apply for this program are of Indian origin and the Government schools that they support are all in India. This is the US arm of Teach for India and is responsible for raising funds for the Fellows who qualify and become part of the TFI Program. We have had an excellent working relationship with TFI and plan to continue support and work with them for many more years into the future.

In 2024 we reached out to North Carolina Agricultural and Technological University (NCAT) and we gave them a grant and have established the TPF Foundation Scholarship Endowment Fund. We will continue to fund this Scholarship on an annual basis, and we expect this fund to get grants from the US government that supports HBCUs.  We strongly believe in giving back to the Black community for all their efforts that enabled Indians like me to come to this country and make a living for myself and my family. This is our way of giving back to the US and to those who gave us this opportunity.

New York University – Tandon School of Engineering

Thiru’s alma mater that provided him with excellent education, during his initial years in the USA.

Habitat for Humanity

A great organization that supports the needy in so many ways. This is a well-run organization and we strongly believe in their mission.

Charity Watch

Another great organization that does an independent validation of Charities in the USA and rates them on their efficiency.

PBS North Carolina

Another great organization that provides independent broadcasting and educational and information programs that are of the highest level of independence.

Stupski Foundation

At Stupski Foundation, we are returning all our resources to the communities we call home by 2029.

Webb Family Foundation

The Webb Family Foundation supports education, health, and sustainability as a path toward helping people persevere and the planet thrive. We leverage the full assets of the Foundation to amplify our impact.

Kimball Foundation

support college access and persistence, cultural enrichment, environmental education, and workplace success programs

Since then, we have found several other organizations in the US to which we have contributed, they are:

If you have an organization you would like to fund, pass along the name and we will vet this organization. We will bear all the administrative costs associated with the pass through of funds.

Our goal is to spend at least 50% of TPF Foundation funds on US based charities.

So why should you give through the TPF Foundation, when you can give directly – great question?

The answer is very simple – because I am asking – and to get TPF Foundation viable, started and established. There are several organizations that do something similar to what we do, for example here are a few of them:

http://www.giveindia.org

http://www.giveasia.org

http://www.gatesfoundation.org  (the greatest and best run charitable)

Once we have established a track record (and once I have more time!) we will take a more active role in raising additional funds for the TPF Foundation.

Our motto is “To Serve and To Share – is the Sacred Secret of Success”. This was so profoundly stated and created by my mother Mrs. Kausalya Thirupuvanam. She has been the soul and spirit and has earnestly believed in giving and in sharing. This is the quality that we want to spread to our children, grandchildren and to our family and friends.

We hope you will join us in contributing to the TPF Foundation and give back to the community. For it is only in sharing do we really find fulfillment in everything that we do.

In the 10 years since we started TPF Foundation we have raised over a Million Dollars, and we have provided Grants of the same amount.

A school in Bangalore India that promotes education and takes a single child from a family that is in poverty and empowers them through education, so that that child and all future generations of that child – will never live-in poverty.

  • This organization works in freeing people from medical debt, they purchase the debt at a penny for each dollar of debt, and secure freedom for those who get into the cycle of medical debt. Most poor and under privileged people get into medical debt, through no fault of their own. We have worked with this organization to relieve these under privileged folks of this medical debt.

In 2020 we realized that we need to contribute to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), without the sacrifices of the folks like Martin Luther King, we would never have come to this great country of USA. It is important to give to the HBCU, and we were confident that the Thurgood Marshall College Fund is the right place to start.

This is the US arm of the Teach for India organization. They are primarily responsible for the fund raising and marketing of Teach for India (TFI) in the United States. Just like TPF Foundation, they are the sister organization of the Indian charitable organization Teach for India, where all the NGO work is being done.

This is the Telugu Association of North America - we have known Mr. Jay Talluri for a long time, and he has been associated this organization and gives of his time freely, we have assisted this organization through annual contributions for the field of Education.

In conclusion, the next 20 years

Our long-term plan is to continue to fund the TPF Foundation. we would love to have you be a part of our journey “To Serve and to Share” as this is the “Sacred part of the Secret to success.” We would love to be even more involved in the giving, and we have many ideas. Rather than coming up with our own ideas and them implementing those ideas (through building an organization to execute those ideas), we want to find “good/great” organizations that are already proficient in what they perform and give them the funds to execute on their programs. Why should we build a whole new organization when someone else is already doing such a good/great job? Once we identify these organizations, let us start supporting them to do even better. There will be many ideas, and we will seek your input on the best way to empower other entrepreneurs who have come to this country (USA) and have been lucky and given the opportunity to make something of themselves.

If you think you have an organization in mind that we should support, please let us know, and we will vet and add them to our list.

FAQ

Why should I give through the TPF Foundation - when I can give directly?

Why give?

Great question. The answer is very simple – because I (Thiru) am asking – and to get TPF Foundation viable, started and established. There are several organizations like this

http://www.giveindia.org

http://www.giveasia.org

and finally the greatest and best run charitable organization –  http://www.gatesfoundation.org

We are working with Teach For India to get their Alumni to work with the Thirupuvanam Foundation to teach our teachers the modes and methodologies that they use to have an impact with Government Schools. A Fellow in TFI can only be there for 2 years, we are hoping to work with some of those Fellow Alumni to build our teaching capabilities, so that we can have a larger impact on Education in Bangalore, India.

We all came with nothing, we are going to leave with nothing. You really cannot take all this stuff and go anywhere.

Bill Gates said if I leave 5 million to my son, and he cannot make it with that much money — then why bother leaving him with 5 billion? I completely agree with this statement. The assets that you want to leave are values, not wealth.

So leave a bit to your 1 or 2 or 3 children… but let’s go help thousands more.

We have been very impressed with this organization Thurgood Marshall College Fund (https://www.tmcf.org ) Thurgood Marshall was the first Black American to serve as a Justice on the US Supreme Court. If it was not for the Civil Rights Movement and the struggle of great leaders like Martin Luther King and Thurgood Marshall, I might not have come to this country, and we strongly feel it is our responsibility to give back to these communities for everything that they have allowed us to accomplish in this great land of opportunity.

Established in 1987, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) is the nation’s largest organization exclusively representing the Black College Community. TMCF Member-Schools include historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs). HBCUs enroll over 80% of all students attending HBCUs. Through scholarships, capacity building and research initiatives, innovative programs, and strategic partnerships, TMCF is a vital resource in the K-12 and higher education space. The organization is also a source for top employers seeking top talent for competitive internships and good jobs.

The organization has awarded more than $300 million in such assistance to its students and member-schools. TMCF distributes 98% of its awards exclusively to HBCUs and PBIs, which is more than another other organization that support the Black College Community. TMCF is a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt, charitable organization.

TPF Foundation info on RIP for Website

We have been very impressed with this organization RIP Medical Debt (www.ripmedicaldebt.org) For every dollar that we contribute to them they are able to eliminate $100 worth of medical debt. Individuals go into medical debt for no fault of their own, due to unforeseen medical situations many families incur this debt. For a rich country like the US to not have guaranteed medical care, is very shameful. Having made our fortune in this country, we feel strongly that we should give back and this is an excellent way to relieve the pain and suffering of these individuals.

RIP Medical Debt empowers donors to forgive billions in oppressive medical debt. We are dedicated to removing the burden of medical debt for individuals and families and veterans across America.

Medical debt destroys the financial stability of large segments of America’s most vulnerable communities: the sick, the elderly, the poor, and veterans. It also targets the middle class, driving many families who are barely getting along into poverty. Medical debt isn’t the result of bad decisions. It’s a debt of necessity.

By forgiving this debt we strive to give struggling individuals, and their families, a fresh start. We hope to give those affected the ability to seek the continued medical care they need and help them back towards financial stability.
